Type Rating Training

Having obtained your PPL(H), you are at first restricted to the specific helicopter type used to complete your initial training.

In order to extend your licence privileges to encompass additional helicopter types, and to ensure that you are ready to fly any new type safely and with confidence, you are required to complete a Type Rating training course specific to each aircraft type. Such courses must be conducted at an approved Flight Training Organisation (FTO) or Type Rating Training Organisation (TRTO).

Elite Helicopters are a JAA-approved FTO (CAA Approval Number UK/FTO-173) and can provide Type Rating training on a range of helicopter types, which include:

  • Robinson R22
  • Robinson R44
  • Bell 206 Jet Ranger/Long Ranger
  • AS350

Each Type Rating course consists of structured theoretical and flight training elements (to include a minimum of 2 to 5 hours flight time, dependent upon the specific type and the individual’s existing rating privileges) followed by a Licence Skill Test (LST) flown with one of our in-house CAA authorised Flight Examiners. This can normally be achieved, weather permitting, in a 2-3 day period, although the time required depends very much on the individual’s prior experience.

Elite Helicopters can also provide approved ’Differences’ training in accordance with JAR-FCL 2.261, (subject to the relevant Type Ratings being held) for those seeking to transition between the following type variants:

  • Bell 206 Jet Ranger to Bell 206L Long Ranger
  • AS350 B/B1/B2 to AS350 B3

Once obtained, the privileges of a Type Rating are valid for 12 months and are re-validated on an annual basis subject to the individual having flown a minimum of 2 hours on type in the preceding validity period as well as passing a Licence Proficiency Check (LPC) with a Flight Examiner.
